Illegal gold mining in Indonesia has become a threat to both the environment and local communities, leading them to shift towards traditional and sustainable farming practices instead. The detrimental effects of such mining have prompted a renewed focus on fostering eco-friendly livelihoods. In Southeast Asia, the rapid scaling of renewable energy, such as solar and wind, is at risk due to weak environmental and social safeguards. The hasty permitting of renewable energy projects without proper spatial planning and public consultation could generate local pushback. It is crucial to recognize the necessity of mindful and strategic placement of renewable energy infrastructure to mitigate adverse environmental impacts and ensure the success of the region's energy transition.
